Pork

Pigs descendants from wild boars and have generally the scientific name Sus Scrofa.

A young pig is called a piglet. Piglets will split up in sucking piglets and weaned piglets. Sucking piglets drink milk by the sow. They called sucking piglets until they will be weaned. After weaning, we speak of a weaned piglet. A pig gets about 6-12 piglets per litter. The gestation period is about 112 to 114 days (3 months, 3 weeks and 3 days).

The pig is farmed for his meat. In some religions, including Judaism and Islam, the pig is considered unclean and not eaten. A lot of pigs in the Netherlands and Belgium will mainly kept in the intensive pig farming, but there are also alternatives such as a organic pig farm and a free-range pig farm. If a pig is 6 months old (and weighs around 100kg), it is ripe for slaughter. Pigs who can’t be slaughtered can be 12/13 years old.
