Habitat
Kudus live in southern Africa as well as in the northeastern region of this continent. The populations of kudus are rising enormously in many of these countries. Kudus are very much leaf-eaters. During extremely dry periods, they can suffer when the leaves of trees become desiccated. Extra culling is then necessary to prevent the entire population from dying out.
Hunting
The hunting of Kudu is not easy. Because kudus can jump 2.5 metres when standing still and 3 metres at a gallop, they can easily jump over fences along roads. The stripes on a kudu’s coat create the perfect camouflage that makes them visible only to someone with a highly practised eye. Kudus are very elusive and do not emerge from among the trees until twilight.
Season
The hunting season for Kudu runs from June through September. Its mating season, when no hunting of them is permitted, occurs three weeks before the hunting season.
Meat
Kudo flesh has a fine texture. This lean tender meat has a beautiful deep red colour. In South Africa, kudu meat is a favourite meat and is also a standard ingredient at a barbecue.
Cuts
Kudo meat is available as filets, cuts from the hindquarter, and cut into cubes as for goulash.
