The turkey (Meleagris gallopavo) is a bird out the family of the poultry-like and is family from the chicken. The turkey is a tame bird who is originally from Yucatan, where he held by the Maya’s. In the 16th century, the bird became in Europe popular on the menu.
The animal must then be imported in northwest Europe through India and Turkey, at least the names of turkey (hen Calicut), "Dinde" (French, poule d'Inde = Indian chicken) and "turkey" (English) point upon that. The Pilgrim Fathers took turkeys to North America. Unnecessary because there already were a large, wild sort, namely the "wild turkey" or Agriocharis ocellata. This sort is in the United States traditionally eaten on Thanksgiving Day. |
