In the summer, the coat is thinner and reddish brown in colour; in the winter, the coat is thicker, almost twice as long and turns greyer. The winter coat is also darker, particularly the mane and belly. The antlers of the Red Deer stag are branched and upright.
Habits
Red Deer live in herds and prefer keeping to large, dense forests and heavily vegetated swamps. They occur almost throughout Europe from southern Sweden and Norway to Spain; in some places, individual breeds have developed.
These days, Red Deer are also bred and raised in captivity, particularly in New Zealand. In that country, the deer are kept in enclosures as large as half the Netherlands.
Gastronomy
The most delicious meat is roast venison taken from young animals and the best parts come from the saddle and haunches. The meat of young animals is bright red to brownish red.
