Blesbuck

The Blesbuck, which is a type of goat antelope, exists in two colour patterns. The most common of these is brown with white on the inside of its legs and a white blaze on its face. The other is entirely white.

Habitat
In South Africa, Blesbucks live in the centre of the country and in the north to the borders with Botswana, Zimbabwe and Mozambique. Here, they are the most common of all antelopes and are real herd animals. A fully mature Blesbuck has a height at the shoulder of approx. 90-100 cm. and a weight of about 40 to 50 kg. Blesbucks quickly increase in numbers and have practically no natural enemies. They are grass-eaters and live primarily on open grasslands. Both the male and female Blesbuck have horns; the only visible difference between the horns being that those of the male are larger. The blaze of male Blesbucks also show a yellow band of secretions from their eyes. Blesbucks still live as real wild game animals in the northern parts of South Africa and in Zimbabwe and Botswana but are rarely hunted.

Season
In most of its habitat, the hunting season begins in April and lasts until the end of August. This is the normal African hunting season. The number of Blesbucks hunted is greater than that of the Wildebeest but not as high as those of the Oryx or Kudu.

Meat
The meat of the Blesbuck is deep red to brick red. The meat is very tender and has a fabulous flavour. The leg muscles are very tender and the meat of the haunches can easily be prepared as steak. Due to its unique flavour, Blesbuck should be prepared as simply as possible. Serve with a light sauce based on fruit juices.

Cuts
As with the other antelopes, Blesbuck is sold as filets, cuts from the hind quarter and goulash.
